Match report
At Clarence Park on Saturday, St Albans City were once more opposed to Tufnell Park, their North London rivals, the draw for the second qualifying round of the English Cup having brought the teams together.
The attractiveness of the fixture drew a crowd of about 2,000, but the game in itself was disappointing, splendid defence on both sides being coupled with inferior forward play – more noticeable in the case of the homesters. The City had their best available eleven in the field, while the Amateur Cup semi-finalists1 were also strongly represented, the eleven including all their most brilliant “stars.”
In the forward line lay the City’s weakness. Only Walker displayed real cup-tie energy and dash. Cavanna tried hard to follow, but failed to reach his best standard. Hughes leadership at centre was poor and when he received not very kindly treatment from the crowd he became flurried when given the ball. The placing of Hammond at outside-right was not altogether successful. Hammond is too light and hardly fast enough for the position.
Tufnell Park were the better team and the City supporters felt that their favourites had got all they deserved in the opportunity for “better luck next time”.
