A BITTER PILL FOR NEWPORTONIANSThe Newportonians,who are in a somewhat lowly position on the Spartan League table, visited the Clarence Park on Saturday and were forced to surrender both League points. This club, owing to lack of a ground, have to play all their matches away and it will be remembered that, on their last visit to the City's ground, four weeks ago, the St Albans men running out victorious by 5-0. On this occasion the homesters displayed their superiority in a still more certain manner, winning by no less than 9-1.
In the first half which the City played against the wind, the game was fairly even, although two goals were scored by the homesters. In the second half, however, following Hatton's dramatic goal and Paul’s successful shot almost immediately afterwards, the visitors fell to pieces and the greatest interest in the match was as to whether the City would reach double figures or no. The Newportonians, in spite of their weakness, played a sporting game throughout and no one grudged them their surprise goal in the second half.
With the exception of the left half and two inside forwards, the Newportonians played the same team as on their previous visit. The City made no change in their team with the exception of the fact that Meagher appeared at left half instead of at right half, Chipperfield re-appearing and Trulock dropping out.
