Match report
St Albans City’s erratic early season form plummeted to a low on a Saturday when bottom of the table Swindon Supermarine overturned a first half deficit to chalk up their first Southern League win of the season at Supermarine Road.

Sean Shields first half strike should have laid the foundation for City’s second away win of the season but Marine hit back with two late goals during a second 45-minutes dominated by the home side.

City’s awayday blues, this was their third defeat in four away matches, was made complete when central defender Tobi Jinadu became the third Saints player to dismissed in as many matches.

City manager David Howell made three changes to the side that defeated Hemel Hempstead. Central defender Ryan Moran had the decent excuse of getting married being behind his absence while Joackim Ehui and Solomon Shields were relegated to the bench.

Sean Shields returned from an ankle injury to line up on the right of the midfield while Jinadu joined Matt Cutchey in the heart of the defence and Nathan Haisley came into the centre of the midfield.

Although the Wiltshire side had the better of the early exchanges it was City who came closest to making an early in-road when Shields switched the play to Danny Hart who cut in from the left and tested home keeper Kent Kauppinen with a firm drive.

It was one of several promising first half raids by Hart but the former Harrow player was, like too many of his teammates, seldom seen after the break.

City keeper Nick Jupp was soon called upon to save from TJ Bohane while Marine midfielder Dave Bampton forced Jupp to beat the ball away.

The home side were having the better of things when City, completely out of the blue, took the lead on 32 minutes.

Haisley and Paul Furlong worked the ball up to Shields who, having switched wings with Hart, cut in from the left and beat Kauppinen with a low shot across the keeper.

A misunderstanding between Jinadu and Jupp on the edge of the penalty area allowed Ashley Edenborough to get in a shot that Jupp blocked. The keeper then did well to get down to take the sting out of Bampton’s follow up effort with Jinadu completing the clearance.

Two minutes from the break Supermarine worked the ball across to Max Etheridge whose powerful rising shot was palmed over the top by Jupp.

Kauppinen, not to be outshone, mirrored Jupp’s save when Hart tried his luck from a tight angle a minute later.

By half time the game looked to be shifting in City’s favour not only through Shields goal but also with their hosts having lost defenders Jon Beedon and Matt Robinson through injury.

Jinadu, whose only previous City appearance was three years ago as a 90th minute substitute during a losing cause at Maidenhead, was booked on 47 minutes following a foul on the lively Edenborough.

And it was Edenborough who led a charge through the City midfield before slipping a pass out to Etheridge. The winger’s powerful shot was only parried by Jupp who then used his legs well to block a point blank effort from Edenborough who had continued his run to deep inside the penalty area.

On 55 minutes Jupp dived to smother an angled effort from Bohane only for the ball to slip from his grasp. Edenborough was in quickly but Jupp recovered to deny the striker.

As the half went on City visibly wilted in the warm sunshine and, to the dismay of their manager, St Albans were put under increasing pressure by their lowly hosts.

Supermarine had loud penalty appeals rejected when Bohane went to ground following a nudge by the outstretched arm of Jinadu while City’s best chance to put the game to bed was lost when Jerome Walker, in a break down the right, shot just wide of the near post when clear.

A minute later, the 72nd, and Marine were back on level terms with a bizarrely soft goal.

Ben Wells slid a low corner to Bampton who was standing some 25 yards from goal and sent a gentle shot, at an angle, with the instep of his right foot past Jinadu, Haisley and Jupp, into the far corner of the net.

One-time Saint Bradley Gray came off the bench to add to the home sides attacking power, and most impressive he was too, as City became increasingly stretched.

Walker, following a cross from Nathan Ralph, headed over the crossbar when unchallenged and within a minute that miss was proven to be costly as the Swindon side secured victory.

Edenborough got the better of Jinadu inside the penalty area and played the ball square to the unmarked Max Etheridge. His first shot struck Jupp’s right hand upright but a generous rebound back into Etheridge’s path allowed him to tuck away his third goal of the season.

City attempted to salvage an unjust point with a late flurry but should have been punished when Marine broke with three-on-one before wasting an excellent position.

Two minutes into added time Jinadu picked up his second yellow card, for a foul on Bampton, as City had a player dismissed in three consecutive games for the first time in 20 years.
