Martin Gurney
A former St Albans City Youth team player who made two appearances for the City Reserves at the start of the 1984-85 season before making his First team debut on 8th September 1984 during a 4-2 Isthmian League win at Stompond Lane over Walton & Hersham. Three days later, one day before his 20th birthday, he scored both goals on his home debut as City defeated Kingstonian 2-1. He went on to prove himself to be a versatile player capable of playing in defence, midfield or attack.
The 1985-86 season saw him get into double figures for the first time. His eleven goals included one of City’s seven during a final day of season 7-1 win over Lewes at the Dripping Pan that clinched the Isthmian League Division One championship. Over the course of the next three seasons he appeared in three consecutive Herts Charity Cup finals but collected just one winners medal.martingurney
With 12 goals in 52 games Martin was City’s top goalscorer for the 1988-89 season and crowned it by winning the Supporters Player of the Year award. He left City in the summer of 1989 to join Harrow Borough where he was appointed club captain and ended the 1989-90 season as the leading goalscorer at Earlsmead. After just one season with Harrow he joined Redbridge Forest where he was a member of the 1990-91 Isthmian League championship winning squad. The summer of 1991 saw him on the move again, this time to Wokingham Road. Just one season was spent at Finchampstead Road before he returned to his hometown club, St Albans City, along with fellow Wokingham players Gary Westwood and Dean Murphy.1988 89 Martin Gurney PoY with Bob Murphy copy
The 1992-93 campaign, under John Mitchell, was Martin’s most successful at Clarence Park as he was part of the squad that were Isthmian League runners-ups, reached the 1st Round of the FA Cup and he collected winners’ medals in the Herts Charity Cup and the East Anglian Cup. With 20 goals in 61 games, this was his most productive season personally, his haul included his only hat-trick in City’s colours when Royston Town were defeated 6-1 in the Southern Combination Cup.
He added to his medal collection towards the end of the 1994-95 season when City appeared in three cup finals in 14 days. City lost to Watford in the Herts Senior Cup but were victorious against Boreham Wood and Fisher 93 in the Herts Charity Cup and London Challenge Cup respectively. Martin scored in the latter two finals, the game at Fisher was played at The Valley, home of Charlton Athletic.
The 1995-96 season was his final one at Clarence Park; he took his total appearances to 413 and goals to 82. His scored his last goal for the club during a Herts Charity Cup semi-final win over Boreham Wood on 24th April and his played his final game three days later when City defeated Molesey in an Isthmian League match.
Martin was 32 when he pulled on a City shirt for the last time and only Dave Lawrence (480) and Phil Wood (900) had made more appearances for the club at that time; he also scored three times in 18 games for the City Reserves. He was booked 22 times during his 413 First team appearances. He was also the eighth highest scorer for the club when he left the Park to join Chesham United for the 1996-97 season.
The Generals had been relegated in 1995 but Martin was a part of the Chesham squad that won the Isthmian League Division One title by eight points from second placed Basingstoke Town in 1996-97. He retired from the game at the end of the 1997-98 season.
In addition to the honours won with his club sides, he also gained representative honours with both the Isthmian League and the Middlesex F.A.
