Match report

In winning the Herts Charity Cup-tie at Ware on Saturday by 4 goals to nil, St Albans City reaped nothing more than their deserts, for they were undoubtedly the better combination. It must be stated at once, however, that Ware were not at full strength being without Catlin(who was injured playing for Herts against Middlesex) and Harradence. The St Albans team took the field without Webb and W.Richardson, but capable substitutes were found in E.Anderson and Knott, who both gave capital exhibitions.
In the middle of the first half some of the Ware players, being unable to make any headway by fair means, made the mistake of trying to stop their opponents by foul tactics and the City occasionally retaliated. Twenty minutes from the close the game was degenerating into one long series of fouls, Ware being mostly to blame, and then the referee stopped play, called the players together and informed them that the next player against whom a foul was given would leave the field. This warning had the desired effect for not another foul occurred, but it was certainly unwise to re-start the game while the goalkeepers were still in the centre of the field.
Smith, in the City goal, had a “holiday,” the shots with which he had to deal numbering about six. Anderson and Price were the most prominent members of a strong defence. The City were well served forward, Walker being the life and soul of a strong quintette. Weston, who scored twice, finding the net for the first time this season, also excelled himself. Hosier and Butcher showed their worth with many brainy moves whilst Knott, the latest of the succession of centre forwards this season, played a dashing game. He goes for goal – which is the main point – and feeds his wings well.

Webb Richardson has been suffering from pleurisy, but is now much better. If fit, on Saturday he is to be given a trial at centre-forward with Tottenham Hotspur Reserves in a South-Eastern League game with Portsmouth.
