Match report
St Albans City started their league matches well by beating Newportonians by 7-1 on Saturday, although, of course, there is not a great deal to boast over in the victory, having regard to the fact that the visitors played only nine men throughout. The Newportonians are to be congratulated upon the plucky stand they made. Although they were the first to score they obviously realised from the start that they were playing a losing game.
The spectators, too, had no doubt from the beginning which side would win, it was only a question of by how many goals. This robbed the game considerably of an interest which was anticipated would be considerable. But interest was not taken away completely. The visitors showed some clever football and no doubt had they had a full team the fight would have been a very stiff one and the City also gave an exceptionally good display. The defence was worried very little and, therefore, had not the opportunityto shine to any extent, though a special word must be said of the smart movements by Anderson.
The City committee tried a new arrangement, that of putting Patrick in the half-back line and it must be said, considering Anderson’s fine performance at back, that the change was a good one. Patrick has always struck one as being something of a half, in fact he would probably fill the centre-forward position to advantage. His only fault is hanging on too long, of which he was forcibly reminded by the crowd on Saturday.
Each of the City players did so well that one refrains from mentioning them individually, but it must be done in the cases of Hosier and Butcher. If ever a player did have hard luck in not getting goals it was Hosier.
