Despite being inexperienced in management Jimmy was appointed by Chairman Bernard Tominey after the sacking of Peter Lawrence at the end of the 1989/90 season. Had 40 games in charge before stepping down and was replaced by John Mitchell for his second spell at Clarence Park in February 1990.
