Mervyn was 46 when he was drafted in for goalkeeping cover by manager Gary Hill and made his only appearance for St Albans City in the 3-0 FA Trophy 3rd Round tie win away to Hastings Town on the 25th January 1999.
Born in Diss in 1952 he had an extensive goalkeeping career playing for Norwich City, Southend United and Chicago Sting.
