Hatfield-born Johnny Croucher made his St Albans City debut on 29th April 1950 during a 4-2 Isthmian League defeat at Clarence Park to a Walthamstow Avenue side that was pipped to the league title by Leytonstone on goal average.
He made two more appearances that season, both in the Herts Charity Cup. The first of which was against Letchworth Town during which a deflected shot gave him his first goal for the club as City ran out 5-3 winners at the Park. Johnny retained his place in the side for the final but City returned home from Underhill without the trophy following a 4-1 defeat to Barnet.
Johnny featured in 16 City matches the following the season, scoring twice. His first goal was the best of the three that he scored for the First team with his blistering shot from 35-yards flying past the Ilford goalkeeper J.Beazley, as City saw off the Essex side 3-0 at home. His three goals each came in different competitions. A week after the Ilford game he scored from an acute angle as the Saints thumped Wealdstone 5-1 at Lower Mead in the F.A. Cup 1st Round Qualifying – Enfield ended our run in the next Round.
On 5th May 1951 he picked up his one winners medal with the First team as we defeated Hitchin Town 1-0, at Underhill, in the final of the Herts Senior Cup.
The 1951/52 season saw him play three games for City with his final appearance being in our 3-1 win over Maidenhead United at Clarence Park in the F.A. Cup. Johnny had a hand in all three of our goals. Maidenhead, beset by injuries before the game, were further hindered by having to start the game with just nine players; this increased to ten after four minutes with their full compliment being reached on 22 minutes, by which time City were one-up. The game caught the attention of the Evening News cartoonist Gittins.
Johnny also played 28 times for the City Reserves and chipped in with nine goals. On April 21st 1951 he was in the City Reserve side that lifted the Herts Intermediate Cup with a 2-1 win over Hitchin Town Reserves at Stevenage. He left City in October 1951 to sign for London League side Welwyn Garden City.
Johnny was born in Hatfield on 26th December 1923 and passed away in Yeovil on 4th December 1998.
