A Barnet and Enfield ‘great’ who was briefly with St Albans City towards the end of the 1961-62 season. During his ten games with us (all in the Isthmian League) he scored one goal. That came during a 3-0 win over Corinthian Casuals at Clarence Park and was our second and final win with him in the side.
At the tender age of 15 he began his career as an inside forward at Barnet but was later given a run out at centre half and he went on to make that position his own.
Alf joined City in the middle of March 1962 after falling out with the Barnet chairman AGP Walters. Prior to then he had spent ten years at Underhill although this was broken while he completed his National Service with the R.A.F., he also spent two months with Hounslow Town whilst at Barnet.
After leaving us in the summer of 1962 he joined Enfield and spent eight successful years at Southbury Road where he featured in 379 games. Alf left Enfield for Slough Town in 1970 but in 1973, at the age of 38, returned to Enfield for one more season. During his 149 games for Slough he played, and was booked, in the Amateur Cup 2nd Round tie against St Albans that saw City’s Bill Ratty suffer a broken jaw at the Dolphin Stadium courtesy of Slough’s Roger Day.
The list of honours gained during his long career is quite remarkable. An England Amateur international, he played 27 times for his country, including eight as captain, and also represented Great Britain in the Qualifying matches for the 1960 Olympics. Other representative honours came his way with five appearances for Hertfordshire in the Southern Counties Amateur Championship and guest appearances for the Middlesex Wanderers as they toured Netherlands, Germany, Uganda, Kenya and Tanganyika.
He picked up two F.A. Amateur Cup winners medals whilst with Enfield (1967 and ’70), and was also twice a beaten finalist (Barnet and Slough). Three Isthmian League championships were won in consecutive years with Enfield and he was an Athenian League runner-up with Barnet. County cup honours also came his way with victory in the Herts Senior Cup (1958 and ’61) and the Herts Charity Cup (1960), the latter being in the same year that he also gained a winner’s medal in the London Charity Cup.
Alf was born in Islington in 1935 but moved to Barnet during the 2nd World War when his hometown was bombed. Away from football he was a plumber but then worked as a machine setter before setting up a sports travel business (KAM Sports) with fellow Barnet and Enfield player, goalkeeper, Tommy Lawrence (formerly of Liverpool).
