Brian Stein joined St Albans City in 1994, some ten years after he made his sole England appearance against France in Paris. During his 42 games for the City, Brian forged a remarkable goalscoring partnership with fellow striker Steve Clark. In those 42 games the duo bagged 68 goals with Brian contributing 32.
Brian marked his City debut with a hat-trick as we saw off Hemel Hempstead Town 5-1 at Vauxhall Road in the Herts Charity Cup. He added two more hat-tricks during the season; the first at Uxbridge in the Full Members Cup and, the second, ten days later at home to Bishop’s Stortford in the Isthmian League. Due to financial constraints City released Brian following a 3-2 win over Marlow on 28th January, 1995, a game in which he scored one but also had a penalty saved by Kevin Mitchell.
Born in Cape Town, Brian was brought to the club by the joint City management pairing of Allan Cockram and Martin Duffield, both also featured in many of the games in which Brian played. He had ended the previous season with Stevenage Borough, having joined the club in February and scoring on his debut against City at Broadhall Way. His 13 goals helped Boro, under the leadership of former City midfielder Paul Fairclough, to win the Isthmian League title. Earlier in his career he had had two spells with Luton Town and also played for Barnet and French clubs Caen and Annecy. One of the high points of Brian’s career with Luton came in the 1988 final of the League Cup when he scored twice in the Hatters 3-2 win over Arsenal at Wembley.
