Frank Ashman
Frank Ashman joined St Albans City immediately after the Second World War and spent a couple of seasons at Clarence Park although his appearances in the First team were limited.
A left-sided player he was highly regarded from the few outings he made with the City. His First team debut came on Saturday 23rd March 1946 during a 4-2 Isthmian League defeat to Wycombe Wanderers at Loakes Park. Playing at left half his debut was most remarkable for the fact that Wycombe were awarded four penalties during the game. City goalkeeper Bert Rolph was only beaten by one of them; he saved two and one was off target.
A week later Ashman scored his first goals for the club with both City efforts during a 3-2 defeat against Romford at Brooklands. The attendance was given as 6,000. Frank made his first appearance at Clarence Park for the senior side on 6th April 1946 when Hitchin Town were the visitors in the Herts Charity Cup. He scored from 25 yards and only the crossbar denied him a second strike from long range later in the game.
Before the season was out he played in the City side that won the St Albans Hospital Cup with a 2-0 victory over the Mid Herts F.A. at Clarence Park. He was less successful in the final of the Herts Charity Cup at Underhill. This was originally scheduled to be the final game of the career of Barnet’s outstanding Amateur England international Lester Finch. Barnet fielded their full Amateur Cup winning side and signed off with a 4-0 win. The game attracted a gate of 3,600.
Frank played in a further seven games during the 1946-47 season including, unfortunately, the club’s record defeat, 11-0 at home to Wimbledon on 9th November 1946. His final game for the First team was on 17th May 1947, and it ended where it all began at Loakes Park, Wycombe, but this time St Albans secured a 2-2 draw.
He is known to have made at least five appearances for the City Reserves and scored two goals.
