Steve Wallace
Steve Wallace joined St Albans City in December 1984 from neighbours Boreham Wood at a time when City were at the top of the Isthmian League Division One table. The Saints were in need of added firepower due to injury looking likely to have brought Paul Mayles career to a premature end.
The speedy Wallace made his debut during a 1-0 Boxing Day victory over struggling Hertford Town at Clarence Park and he retained his place for a win at Chesham United three days later that saw City return to the top of the table. Wallace then scored in all of his next four games, starting with an overhead kick that sparked a 3-1 win for the Saints against his former club at Broughinge Road. That goal was all the more galling for Wood as Steve was their current Player of the Year and had scored 52 times in 145 games for the club.
City, though, were unable to maintain the form that had taken them to the top of the table and ended the campaign in sixth place, nineteen points adrift of champions Farnborough Town. Wallace had scored ten times in 26 games.
He returned for pre-season at the start of the 1985-86 season but was released during a run of friendly matches as manager John Mitchell organised his squad. Steve rejoined Boreham Wood and reminded City of what they could be missing out on by scoring twice in Wood’s 3-1 win at Clarence Park in November.
Wallace returned to Clarence Park in the summer of 1990 after a spell with Chesham United and had ended the 1989-90 season with a couple of months at Hendon. He played in a Hendon side beaten 2-1 by the Saints in April 1990, it was City’s last win with Peter Lawrence as manager. Wallace’s new manager at St Albans was the former Boreham Wood defender Jimmy Howard. Howard’s season at Clarence Park did not go well and early in the campaign suffered a humiliating F.A. Cup defeat away to Essex Senior League side Ford United.
After making eleven goalless appearances Steve’s second spell at the Park ended following a 2-1 defeat at home to Aylesbury United on 29th September.
