Signed for St Albans City from Enfield as a 23-year-old central defender in March 1990 and marked his debut by scoring during a 1-1 draw with Marlow at Clarence Park. Ended the season with an appearance in the side that lost to Aveley in the final of the Isthmian League Cup. Left the club at the end of the season but rejoined in January 1992 following a spell with Harrow Borough. Played 61 times during the 1992-93 season that saw St Albans finish as Premier Division runners-up to Chesham United. Joined Sittingbourne for the start of the following season but his year with the Kent club was blighted by a back injury, restricting him to just 15 (albeit unbeaten) appearances. Returned to Clarence Park for the next five seasons before retiring as a player at the end of the 1998-99 season. Started the 1999-2000 campaign as manager of City’s Reserve side only to be elevated to manager of the First team in January following the sudden departure of Bob Dowie. His side should have finished the season in third place but a final day of the season defeat at Dulwich Hamlet sent them sliding down to sixth position. A poor start to the following season saw him dismissed at the end of September with City in 17th position in the Isthmian League. As a manager he was the first to lead the club to victory in the final of the Herts Senior Cup for 31 years. As a player he was City’s Player of the Year in 1997-98 and in addition to being a member of the Saints Isthmian League runners-up side of 1992-93, he collected winners medals in the London Challenge Cup, Herts Charity Cup and East Anglian Cup. Scored 34 times for St Albans City and was captain for many of his 326 games. At the time he hung up his boots he was 11th in City’s all time appearances chart. Began his senior playing career with Mount Grace (now known as Potters Bar Town).
