Move to:
Keith King
P.E. Master Keith King joined St Albans City for the start of the 1975-76 season after impressing City boss Sid Prosser in preseason games. Formerly in the Northern League with Durham City, his hometown, and Whitley Bay, King moved south to joined Bedford Town but spent just half of the 1974-75 season at the Eyrie, where he was troubled by injury, before moving to Clarence Park.
Due to being away on holiday, he missed City’s first four games of the season but was in the starting XI when the winless run ended in the fifth game, a 1-0 win over Bromley at Clarence Park. Tall and blond he cut a striking figure in midfield but had a preference for playing up front. In March 1976 he was pushed into the forward line and responded with spell of seven goals in five games. During his first season at the Park he appeared in 52 of City’s 64 games and with 15 goals was the second highest goal scorer behind Nick O’Donoghue who found the back of the net on 26 occasions.
The 1975-76 season was the first in which the club ran a Supporters Player of the Season competition and Keith King had the honour of being the first recipient of the trophy.
Manager Sid Prosser quit on the eve of the following season and was replaced by his assistant, John Clark. Although King was a regular in the team for the first half of the season, he and Clark failed to see eye-to- eye, and when he picked up an injury during a 4-0 FA Trophy replay defeat away to Staines Town on the 28th December his time at the Park was over.
He left St Albans just after the turn of the year and saw the season out with Hertford Town. Clark was dismissed towards the end of the season with former player Bob Murphy, who had just captained Boreham Wood to the Isthmian League Division Two championship, returning to Clarence Park as manager. Murphy re-signed King for the start of the 1977-78 season.
King scored in his first two games under the new manager, the second of which saw Division One Isthmians City pull off a shock 3-2 win away to Premier Division side Carshalton Athletic in the FA Cup on 17th September. He also broke a bone in his foot during that game but the seriousness of the injury was only realised during a defeat at Aveley the following week. King was back in the side for an FA Trophy tie against Wembley in mid-October but only aggravated the injury and was then sidelined until the back end of November.
He returned for a 2-2 draw with Ware and the following week he made his only appearance as a substitute during City’s best performance of the season; a 5-0 drubbing of an Ilford side at Clarence Park that had been unbeaten in its first 16 league games of the season. King’s final league game for St Albans was the return fixture at Ilford, that City lost 2-1, and on 7th February 1978 he made his last appearance for the club when a 2-0 defeat was suffered at Hertford Town in the Mithras Cup. He was an unused sub in a couple of matches before leaving Clarence Park in mid-March.
Keith King scored 21 times in 87 games for St Albans City.
